1. Civil Engineering Professor recognized as conservationist
A. Salim Bawazir, assistant professor of civil engineering, has been recognized as the ‘Outstanding Conservationist for 2007’ from the Sierra Soil and Water Conservation District of New Mexico. The award was presented at a meeting in Elephant Butte on December 11, 2007. Eugene Atkins from the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service and Merry Jo Fahl of SSWCD presented the award.

2. Engineering staff honored in former dean’s name
Two NMSU College of Engineering employees have been honored for excellence in their service to the university. Jarma D. Holguin, administrative secretary for the Manufacturing Technology and Engineering Center (M-TEC), received the Bromilow Staff Excellence Award. Electrical and Computer Engineering Professor Paul M. Furth received the Bromilow Excellence in Teaching Award. The awards were presented at a ceremony held Friday, Feb. 22.

3. NMSU to open one-of-a-kind test center for unmanned aircraft
New Mexico State University will become a national hub of research and development work on unmanned aircraft systems, thanks to an agreement with the Federal Aviation Administration that takes advantage of the unique airspace in southern New Mexico as well as NMSU’s expertise in unmanned aircraft system research. 4. NMSU researchers help cities develop solar power
New Mexico State University’s Institute for Energy and the Environment (IEE) in the College of Engineering has joined with industry, universities, and state and local governments around the country in a strategic partnership with the Department of Energy (DOE) in The Solar America Initiative. IEE researchers Andrew Rosenthal, John Wiles, and Robert Foster have been working to help the DOE meet its goal of making solar technologies cost-competitive with traditional forms of energy by 2015. 7. In Memoriam: Joe T. Budenholzer
Joe T. Budenholzer died at the age of 88 in Omaha, Neb. Joe was a NMSU mechanical engineering graduate and a long-time supporter of the college. Read More

8. NMSU alum establishes mechanical engineering professorship
Robert G. Myers recently established a department head professorship in mechanical engineering with a gift of $250,000. Read More

9. Recent gifts to the College of Engineering
The College of Engineering is grateful to have received the following recent gifts:
- Harris Corporation: $10,000 for senior design projects in electrical engineering
- ExxonMobil: $14,800 for scholarships and student support
- Pacific Gas and Electric: $5,000 for the Electric Utility Management Program
- The family of Doris Simpson has established an endowment for a chemical engineering scholarship
A fundraising effort is well underway for the establishment of the Ken White Civil Engineering Professorship. To date, gifts have been received from Twin Mountain Construction, A.S. Horner, John Hernandez, Chuck Hamilton Construction, and various alumni.
