Industrial engineering students host IBM presentation

The NMSU student chapter of the Institute of Industrial Engineers recently hosted a presentation by Raul Muñoz, Jr. from IBM.  Muñoz addressed engineering student organization leaders about how to make their organizations more meaningful to members and how to be successful candidates at job fairs.

Muñoz joined IBM’s General Products Division in 1977 as a human resources professional. He has more than 25 years of human resources experience in staffing, compensation, benefits, and operations management supporting IBM’s Professional Services, Sales and Distribution, and Workforce Solutions Divisions.

Muñoz is currently the university recruiting manager responsible for IBM’s campus activities in the West and Southwest. He provides recruiting leadership at select universities as well as nurturing relationships of mutual value with faculty, staff and student organizations. Muñoz serves as IBM’s national recruiting representative supporting the Society of Mexican American Engineers and Scientists, the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers and the American Indian Science and Engineering Society.

Muñoz works with nine universities. “IBM likes to work with New Mexico State University because of the diverse community and student population,” he said.

Muñoz gave the student leaders pointers on how to increase the value of membership to their organizations, beginning with a chapter mission, strategic plan and goals that can be passed on as leadership changes from year to year.

In the second portion of his presentation, Muñoz advised students on how to be successful at job fairs. “You have to think like a recruiter,” he said.  “Make a list of the top 10 companies that you are interested in and do some research about them. Make a good impression. Have a good resume that is targeted to the jobs they have to offer.”

The presentation was sponsored by IBM, the Department of Industrial Engineering, Engineers Council and the College of Engineering.
