Engineering graduates receive honors


The New Mexico State University College of Engineering honored its fall 2007 graduating class on Friday, Dec. 14, in the Corbett Center Student Union Ballrooms. Among them were the Outstanding Senior, Master’s and Doctoral students selected by the Alumni Association. Also recognized was the Highest Honors student having the highest grade point average in the college.

The Alumni Association selects an outstanding senior from each academic college, as well as one international senior and two graduate students, based on outstanding scholarship, leadership, ability and participation in university and community activities.

The College of Engineering honored Outstanding Senior Jose Alanis of Las Cruces, an engineering technology major in electronics and computer programming. Alanis has a 3.87 GPA, is a Crimson Scholar and was on the Dean’s Honor List. He served as president of the Tau Alpha Pi National Honors Society of Engineering Technology and is a member of the National Society of Collegiate Scholars.

The Graduate School and College of Engineering honored OUtstanding Master's Student Sri Raga Sudha Garimella of Las Cruces, who received a master’s degree in electrical and computer engineering. Garimella has a 3.7 GPA and is treasurer of the Electrical Engineering Graduate Student Association. She has earned scholarships from the Hispanic Engineering National Achievement Award Corporation and the Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers, and she won first place at the national level All India Mathematics Talent Test in 2000.

The Graduate School and College of Engineering also honored OUtstanding Doctoral Student Xiumin Diao of Las Cruces, who received a doctorate in mechanical engineering. Diao has a 4.0 GPA and he received the NMSU Merit-based Enhancement Fellowship of the Graduate School in 2006 and 2007 and the Paul W. Klipsch Graduate Scholarship in 2006. He also won the Excellent Graduating Graduate Award from the Beijing University of Aeronautics and Astronauts in 2003.

Earning Highest Honors in the College of Engineering was Andrew N. Daumueller, graduating in civil engineering with a 4.0 grade point average. Daumueller is on the Dean’s List and has received numerous academically-based scholarships. He has served as vice president and president of Chi Epsilon, a Civil Engineering Honor Society, and vice president of Tau Beta Pi, an Engineering Honor Society. He is a member of the American Society of Civil Engineers. Daumueller is also active in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
