Surveying department receives equipment
By Elizabeth Myers

The surveying engineering department recently received a gift of surveying equipment valued at $14,000 from Delta Land Surveying, a surveying firm in Anna, Tex.

The equipment, part of the Topcon laser zone system, includes a positioning zone laser and  a positioning zone sensor. The lasers are used for leveling in conjunction with a Global Positioning System. They laser signal has a working range of 2,000 feet and a vertical measuring area of 33 feet and can be used with mobile rovers.

“It’s a significant donation,” said Earl Burkholder, associate professor of surveying engineering. “We will have specific application for it in our SUR 328 Construction Surveying class as well as other special topics classes offered on demand.”

The donor, Larry Busby, met Burkholder through a professional society. Burkholder said he was pleased that the Texas-based company chose to make the gift to New Mexico State University.

“We are delighted to receive it,” said Burkholder.
