Surveying engineering professor authors new book

New surveying engineering book
NMSU associate professor of surveying engineering has developed a new model for handling digital spatial data.

Earl F. Burkholder, associate professor of surveying engineering at New Mexico State University, has recently seen 12 years of hard work fulfilled with the publication of his new book: “The 3-D Global Spatial Data Model: Foundation of the Spatial Data Infrastructure,” offering a new model for handling digital spatial data called the global spatial data model (GSDM).

“The book is written for surveyors, engineers and photogrammetrists,” Burkholder said. “It also contains valuable information for anyone who uses a Global Positioning System (GPS) or a Geographical Information System (GIS).”

The book’s foreword states that “The GSDM is built on the assumption of a single origin for three –dimensional geospatial data and formally defines procedures for handling spatial data that are consistent with digital technology and modern practice.”

What was Burkholder’s motivation for writing this book? “It is my hobby,” he said. “It’s a small contribution to the profession and to society. I’m enormously grateful for the opportunity to do it,” Burkholder said.

The book, published by CRC Press (ISBN 978-104200-6301), is available through Amazon.com or the NMSU bookstore under “local authors.”
