NMSU Art Gallery and College of Engineering to host Meet the Artist

The New Mexico State University Art Galleryand the College of Engineering will host a reception for visitors to meet San Diego artist Joyce Cutler-Shaw. Shaw is creator of the gallery's first exhibition of the 2009-2010 season, “Of Water and the River: Meditations on the Rio Grande." The reception will be held Friday, Oct. 23 from 10-11:30 am. The exhibition, which is an installation of photographs, maps, artist’s books and drawings, will run through Saturday, Oct. 24.
The exhibition is a celebration of the Rio Grande and explores the history, engineering, nature and the politics of water. Acting as a visual essay the project gives insight on everything from the river’s dams, to the wildlife to the controversy on who has rights to the water.
“The exhibition is an exploration of the significance of the river,” gallery director Preston Thayer said.
The exhibition is a part of a larger, multi-year study by Cutler-Shaw on the waters of the world. Her works have focused on world-famous seas and rivers in a three decade long project. The opening reception for the exhibition is free and open to the public. The gallery is located in D.W. Williams Hall on University Avenue. east of Solano Drive.
