Six faculty join College of Engineering
The College of Engineering has welcomed six new faculty members this fall. Department heads say they will all bring expertise and growth in key research and classroom instruction.
Jessica Perea Houston has joined the chemical engineering faculty as assistant professor.
“Dr. Houston has expertise in bioengineering, including optical sensing techniques that could be applied to characterizing heterogeneities in material. She provides much needed expertise in the growing interdisciplinary area of bioengineering, and provide the link between bioengineering and materials science,” Martha Mitchell, head of the chemical engineering department said.
Houston earned her bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering from NMSU, and her master’s degree and doctoral in chemical engineering from Texas A&M University.
The Chemical Engineering Department also welcomes Hongmei Luo as an assistant professor.
“Dr. Luo has an excellent publication record. She has published in top journals in materials science, including Advanced Materials, the Journal of Physical Chemistry, Chemistry of Materials, Physical Review B, and the Journal of the American Chemical Society,” Mitchell said.
Luo earned her doctorate in 2006 in chemical engineering from Tulane University in New Orleans and has already authored 69 peer-reviewed publications. Luo received her bachelor's degree in chemistry from Fuyang Normal University in China, and her master’s in material science and engineering from the University of Science and Technology of China.
Manuel Gomez has rejoined NMSU as an assistant professor in mechanical engineering technology. He previously served at NMSU as a part-time college instructor, 2002; part-time assistant professor, 1995-1999, and research specialist at the Composite Material Research Lab, 1992-1993.
“Manny brings relevant industry experience that is critical for students in our applied programs," said Sonya Cooper, head of Engineering Technology and Surveying Engineering.
Gomez received bachelor's and master's degrees in mechanical engineering and economics, and is working towards his doctorate in mechanical engineering, all from NMSU.
Yu-Li Huang has joined the industrial engineering faculty as assistant professor.
“His expertise is healthcare systems engineering,” Edward Pines, head of the industrial engineering department said. “For some time, alumni and friends of the department have encouraged us to develop a presence in this area of industrial engineering. We look forward to Dr. Huang helping us grow in this important direction.”
Huang received his bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees in industrial and operations engineering from the University of Michigan. The Klipsch School of Electrical and
Computer Engineering at NMSU welcomed Wenxin Liu as assistant professor.
Paul Furth, interim head of the Klipsch School of Electrical and Computer Engineering, said, “Wenxin Liu’s area of expertise is power system optimization and control. This past summer, Dr. Liu submitted a career proposal to Nation Science Foundation on this topic.”
Liu received his bachelor’s degree in industrial automation from Northeastern University in China. He earned his master’s degree in control theory and applications from the National Engineering Center of Automation in the same school. Liu earned his doctorate in electrical engineering from the Missouri University of Science and Technology (formerly University of Missouri at Rolla).
Anastasia Dobroskok has joined the faculty as assistant professor of mechanical and aerospace engineering.
“She will immediately draw on her experience and interest in computational solid mechanics in presenting our new graduate course in continuum dynamics this semester,” Tom Burton, department head of mechanical and aerospace engineering, said.
Dobroskok received her master’s degree in mechanical engineering from St. Petersburg Technical University, and her doctorate in mechanical engineering from the Institute for Problems of Mechanical Engineering, also in St. Petersburg, Russia.
