The College of Engineering Mission

The College of Engineering will uphold the land-grant mission of NMSU through nationally recognized programs in education, research, and professional and public service.

The College of Engineering Vision

By 2015, the College of Engineering at NMSU will rank among the top 25 public engineering programs in the United States in teaching, research and service.

Goal 1
To be nationally and internationally recognized for academic and research programs in engineering and engineering technology.

Objectives:

A. Rank within top 50 US News and World Report "Best Undergraduate Engrg. Programs with Ph.D."
B. Rank within top 10 "ScienceWatch" list in publications/peer citations.
C. Rank within top 25 public engineering graduate programs in US News and World Report.
D. Increase graduate student enrollment from 364 (fall 2005) to 500 (fall 2015).

Strategies:

  1. Increase externally funded research in the College of Engineering.
  2. Recruit, develop and retain nationally recognized and diverse faculty and staff.
  3. Develop resources to promote and support academic and research excellence.
  4. Develop marketing plan for the College of Engineering including outreach to key stakeholders and constituents through advocacy materials and events; develop media relationships with targeted electronic and print media.

 

Goal 2
Provide world-class engineers and engineering technologists for industrial, government, and academic constituents of the College of Engineering.

Objectives:

A. Full employment of graduates seeking positions in industry and government.
B. Increase number of Ph.Ds per year securing faculty positions at Research 1 institutions.
C. Increase percentage of graduates going to graduate studies at Research 1 institutions.

Strategies:

  1. Provide nationally competitive engineering programs supported by world class laboratory and teaching facilities.
  2. Continuously improve curriculum to respond to key stakeholder needs.
  3. Increase awareness of College of Engineering programs with potential employers and other graduate schools.

Goal 3
To be the “University of Choice” for undergraduate engineering and engineering technology education in the region.

Objectives:

A. Increase undergraduate enrollment from 1,463 (fall 2005) to 2,000 (fall 2015).
B. Increase first to third semester in-college retention rates by 10 percent.
C. Increase average entering freshmen composite ACT scores to 27.
D. Increase number of national merit scholarship finalists recruited as freshmen from 2 per year to 10 per year.
E. Increase six-year in-college graduation rate by 10 percent.

Strategies:

  1. Inspire and guide K-12 students to pursue engineering careers at NMSU.
  2. Improve retention of engineering students.
  3. Develop resources to promote and support academic and research excellence.
  4. Attract non-traditional students to the College of Engineering.
  5. Develop marketing plan to increase awareness in high school students of engineering and NMSU College of Engineering.
  6. Develop an engineering extension to serve the local economy.
